REQUIREMENTS:要求:
Length:長度:
3-5 pages in length, double spaced 12-point Times New Roman font (remember than submitting 3 pages of well written arguments is better than submitting 5 pages of poorly written arguments).
Thesis:主體
Create an original thesis by disagreeing with the arguments of an opposing viewpoint (Chapter 14’s essay – The Whole World is Watching and No One Cares offers a general model of such an essay. However, for this essay, use it only as a guide for hard evidence, NOT soft evidence).
If you are for the Occupy movement’s protest of economic inequality, then you have to disagree with David Brooks
(The Great Restoration). If you are against the Occupy movement’s protest, you have to disagree with Paul Krugman (Panic of the Plutocrats).
If you are against saving endangered languages you will have to disagree with David Crystal (Death Sentence – why endangered languages need to be saved). If you are for saving endangered languages you have to disagree with Kenan Malik (Let them die).
Support:

You should disagree with your opposing opinion piece by finding problems with the arguments it offers. The Disagree section of the Agree and Disagree chapter reviews a few common approaches to disagreeing with an author by finding problems or flaws in their arguments:

You should review your opposing opinion piece and consider what problems there are with the author’s arguments. The Agree and Disagree chapter offers different templates for identifying the different problems, but you are not required to use them.
A few things to keep in mind when making your arguments:在論證你的論點,有幾件事情要記住。
-For those points you disagree with strongly, you should quote your opinion pieces and explain the point you are disagreeing with. I am not requiring you to make a specific number of quotes like the last paper. This is up to your own judgment.
-You can further support your disagreements with the opposing opinion piece by agreeing with the points of opinion pieces on Icon by the authors who support your viewpoint.
-You can use outside sources to support your arguments but use them wisely. I want to leave this as an option in case somebody wants to make a criticism about an author ignoring contradictory research.
Soft Evidence:
One moral argument is required. (Your argument must appeal to a value of some kind). This moral argument can be made in general terms (it’s not necessary to cite outside sources) and it will likely involve considering your issue in terms of the value of fairness.
(Emotional language and appeals are NOT required by your paper. Such soft evidence is usually not relevant to academic writing).
