How to make a thesis statement?A good thesis statement conveys and reinterprets the main idea of the subject discussed. We will look closely at good and bad thesis statement examples to pinpoint the exact parameters of a decent thesis statement. This article provides tips for your thesis statement.
一、Why a thesis statement Is so important
Essentially, a thesis statement is the best way to organize your thoughts and narrow down the focus of the paper. If you know exactly what you aim to prove, you will have an easy time making valid points, defending your logic, etc. This statement should be the first thing an author creates when starting to work on the paper.
A good thesis statement can help make your paper more logical and focused, and even simplify the writing process for you. When you understand the main idea of your paper, you can express it in a clear and intelligible manner throughout the paper.
Another reason why the thesis statement is so important is that you are not likely to get an A for an essay which doesn’t include a thesis statement. It is one of the first things a Professor evaluates in an academic paper and one of the main factors for your grade.
二、How to make a thesis statement
An essay’s thesis consists of the following elements:
The main idea of your paper expressed in a simple sentence.
The reason(s) why you support and choose this idea.
A counterargument to your claim. This is a valid piece of information which can, in turn, support your position. Use it only in case you have one.
So after you have determined these points, you should organize them in one or two coherent sentences. Here is an example of a good thesis statement that includes all of the necessary elements mentioned above:
所以在你確定了這些要點之后,你應該把它們組織成一兩個連貫的句子。下面是一個好的論點陳述的例子,它包含了上面提到的所有必要元素:
Example:Though uniforms can improve unity in schools, schools should not make students wear them.
This statement is based on the idea that uniforms can limit students’ freedom, which is, in a way, a violation of basic human rights.
Points to check to see that your statement is strong:
It’s brief and carries valuable information.
It gives a clear argument which shows your opinion.
It has a logical basis and is backed by basic logic or facts.
The thesis statement should highlight the topic, the claim, and the major points which you are going to use in your academic paper to support the claim.
三、thesis statement examples
1.Expository thesis statement
In an expository essay, you’ll aim to explain the facts of a topic or process. Your thesis doesn’t have to give a strong opinion, but it should clearly state the central point you want to make about your topic, and mention the key aspects that you’ll explain.
Let’s take two versions of a thesis statement from an essay about the invention of Braille (the raised-dot reading system used by blind and visually impaired people).
Weak thesis statement
Braille was an important nineteenth-century invention.
The example above makes a factual statement, but it doesn’t tell the reader anything about what they’ll learn from your essay.
Improved thesis statement
The invention of Braille transformed the lives of blind people in the nineteenth century, but its success depended on mainstream acceptance by sighted teachers, and this process was shaped by debates about disabled people’s place in society.
The second example is much more specific: it shows that you won’t just describe facts about Braille, but also explain the social context and consequences of its invention.
2.Argumentative thesis statement
In an argumentative essay, your thesis should take a strong position. Your aim in the essay is to convince your reader of this thesis based on evidence and logical reasoning.
Take a look at these two versions of a thesis statement in an essay about U.S. environmental policy.
Weak thesis statement
The U.S. Government should invest in a Green New Deal.
The example above takes a position, but it doesn’t tell the reader anything about why you hold this position.
Improved thesis statement
The U.S. Government should invest in a Green New Deal that prioritizes green jobs; as the world’s most powerful economy, it can take the lead in combating climate change at the same time as improving its citizens’ wellbeing.
In this improved thesis statement, you also state your reasoning and summarize the main points that you will use to convince your reader of your position. The rest of your essay will expand and argue for these points.
