As the biggest retail firm in the UK, and the fourth biggest firm in the world supermarket field, Tesco is faced with many different problems (Criticism of Tesco, n.d.). Tesco has been heavily criticized by the media in both the UK and Ireland over its comparatively more ruthless and harsh business tactics. It has also involved into something like personal injury, employing child labourer and so on. There are some problems in the company’s logistics management.

A recent case happened in 2007 when Tesco failed to deliver groceries via online shopping to a university campus in Sussex, offering no refund or apology. This caused great criticism from customers who have similar experiences. This case reflects problems existing in the logistics management (Haverkamp, 2010). As the company’s online business now makes up a big proportion in the whole business, things like that should be avoided as more as possible.

To make a more harmony relationship with customers, Tesco can try to communicate more with customers. Communication is the most useful tool to solve conflicts, as conflicts can not be avoided. If the company can not accompany some kind of service, what it should do is try to explain reasons to customers and provides some indemnifying measures. But the more important thing to do is try to improve a more high quality service. Often a logistics management with mistakes would not reduce costs. But on the contrary would increase the management costs and lead to lower profits at the same moment. Customer service is a key section in the logistics management.

From the angle of Tesco, sometimes it takes some strategies (Christopher, 1992) benefiting more to the company itself, which is reasonable. In the fierce retail market competition, every company is trying more to gain more profits.

Based on the whole research, logistics management of a firm should fix on the client relationship management and supply chain management. In the increasingly fierce competition, the one mastering customers’ consuming trend, strengthening touches with customers, extending its marketing channels, providing timely and outstanding customer service, can eventually keep the indefectible position. The valuable chain of customers, suppliers and partners has become the core power in the competition.

And at the same time, information technology would always play important roles in logistics management. Other things like transportation and inventory management, package management would never be neglected. Through the analysis of the case of Tesco, it is easily can be found that logistics management is a whole with each part promoting each other.
