A Tentative Study on the Strategies in Translating English Advertisements into Chinese
1. Introduction
In the economic trend of globalization, with China's success in becoming a member of WTO, the economic relations among countries become increasingly close. More and more Chinese products go overseas to participate in international competition, and foreign commodities are entering Chinese market meanwhile. There is a growing need for advertising communication.
1.1 The background of the study
As we all know, advertising is the direct interaction between manufacturers and consumers, and the sole purpose of advertisements is to arouse public attention and awareness, make people understand the information they convey, and ultimately take some action in accordance with their own needs. But there exist some problems in present advertising translation in China. Many translators do not understand business just consider translation from the perspective of language while neglecting their functions in target environment.
Therefore,there is a need to improve present advertising translation situation. Under the circumstances, advertising translation becomes more and more important for target consumers to understand the original advertisements and further take action to make purchases.
1.2 The objective of the research
So far, the quantity of advertisement translation has already been numerous, but there still exists serious problems. In order to improve advertisement translation, a unified guiding principle is in urgent need for the time being. This thesis may help to promote the development of the proper principle which should be employed in translating the original advertisements in order to achieve the same effect in the target language. The author first studies characteristics of language and then studies different strategies of translation, focusing on the strategies of rendering, i.e. literal translation, free translation and sets translation and so on. To do that, the author gathers relevant example for analysis.
The research is intended to explore the translation strategies in the area of English advertisements. A list of translation strategies will be presented and example will also be provided to elaborate why certain strategies are explored to translating corresponding English advertisements.
1.3 The significance of the research
With the increasing global and cross-cultural business activities, advertisements translation for marketing of goods and brand reputation is becoming significant. People who live in the same culture background have same culture. People who live in the different culture backgrounds have different culture. If people do the translations, culture differences can be the obstacles to the communication. Therefore, it’s our responsibility to reduce barriers between the two cultures in a more balanced way.#p#分頁標題#e#
1.4 The structure of the research
The current paper consists of four parts. Part one is an introduction of the whole paper, which includes the background, objective, significance, structure of the paper. Some theories relevant to the research are contained in part two. And then the paper puts forward the strategies which are literal translation, free translation, and sets translation, for translating English advertisements into Chinese with more than 30 examples. This article focuses on how to effectively use literal translation, free translation and sets translation to do the translation.

3) Observe “The Rules for References” in Appendix XII of《dissertation寫作課程輔導手冊》when making direct or indirect quotations. Direct quotations need not to be translated into English if there are originally in Chinese.

3. Data Description
Since the research is intended to study the strategies of translating English advertisements into Chinese, the author needs to gather some English advertisement slogans and their corresponding translations. All the examples are all to be analyzed in the literal translation, free translation and sets translation.
In the following sections, 30 English advertisements have been selected as examples.
3.1 Literal Translation
Literal translation is not only faithful to the original text, keeping the original language and cultural identity, but also easy to understand the foreign culture for readers.

These slogans are very plain and straight, and we understand them easily. Therefore, the advantage of literal translation is to describe things clearly and directly. Generally literal translation remains the rhetoric of the original text. Literal translation is a good choice in translation.
3.2 Free Translation
Free translation only expresses the general idea of the original text. The metaphor of the original, construction of the original sentence and meaning of the original words may disappear. But free translation does not mean to delete or add content to the original and translators must consider the original translation carefully and express the meaning of the original. Free translation is a skill, by which translators have to know different kinds of culture of both source language and target language and have extensive knowledge.
