• This is NOT a research paper, so you should NOT include material you have found on the internet or from the Haiti Research Paper - use only lecture, documentary, and film materials that are listed on the Syllabus for this class. If caught using web material you will receive a failing grade for the paper, and possibly the class (see page 4 of the Syllabus for more on the issue of plagiarism and academic honesty). 

• Your paper should be double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1” margins, with page numbers bottom right (in 'footers' and not in 'headers').

• Your thesis statement must be italicized or in bold.

Question

 

In his article Discourse on Colonialism Aimé Cesaire claimed that colonization:艾梅·塞澤爾殖民主義話語在他的文章中聲稱，定植：

In other words, Cesaire argued that every colonizer underwent the same process of change that Mr. Kurtz experienced in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Kurtz noted in his report for the International Society for the Suppression of Savage Customs that Western technology meant European colonizers "must necessarily appear to them [savages] in the nature of supernatural beings - we approach them with the might as of a deity" and as a result Kurtz and his fellow colonizers could through "the simple exercise of our will ... exert a power for good virtually unbounded" (page 45, Dover edition). However, when Marlow finally reaches Kurtz's station he finds the heads of 'rebel' African tribesmen impaled upon stakes around Kurtz's compound as a warning to others of the dangers of defying Mr. Kurtz's wishes (pages 52-54, Dover edition). 

 

You should therefore write an essay in which you explain why you agree or disagree with Cesaire's statement that the act of colonizing dehumanizes the colonizer. You should respond directly to the arguments he puts forward in his quotation above (taken from his Discourse on Colonialism), and provide multiple examples to support your answer. Note; this is not about the natives, the colonized, but the colonizer, those doing the colonizing. 

 

You should draw on materials from ALL FOUR units of the class in your answer to provide multiple examples

 

You should include material from the lectures, films, and documentaries. However, you should NOT include any course readings or novels, or material you found for your Research Paper or examples that Cesaire himself uses in his article. You should draw your examples from as wide a span of history as possible, and from as wide a variety of mediums as possible (i.e. you should not use only Unit 1 or Unit 4 material, or use only lectures for examples, but draw from ALL 4 units of the class and a variety of mediums).#p#分頁標題#e#
