Coursework #1 (50%)
You are asked to write a 2,500 word report that critically evaluates the economic contribution the arts make to tourism and associated infrastructure within the UK. You will be expected to provide an investigation into the notion that investment in the arts generates economic outputs that outweigh that investment. You will also be expected to evaluate the sustainable nature of cultural tourism and the long-term benefits of this kind of financial expenditure.
Assessment Criteria for Coursework:
Marks will be awarded for clarity of exposition, a logical progression of ideas expressed in the structure of the essay and evidence that source material has been effectively understood and interpreted for the purposes of developing an argument. In particular, evidence will be sought for:
• Wide reading of academic sources
• Use of a range and variety of timely research sources
• Good use of referencing from these sources
• Use of appropriate examples and case studies
This assignment is designed to test students’ achievement of the following learning outcomes:
• Critically analyse the various forms and categories of cultural products and the ways these are managed and presented.
• Analyse the operational imperatives of cultural output in terms of development, and current trends and relate these to specific arts activities.
• Analyse and evaluate the marketing and consumption of cultural products in relation to relevant market segments.
• Critically examine the role of culture in local and regional settings.
Level 6 Generic Assessment Criteria and Grading Descriptors
The following are indicative performance descriptors for the various grade bandings. Work identified as belonging to a particular banding on a given criteria will broadly fit that description. However, it is recognised that each descriptor contains a number of sub-elements and the student’s work may not exactly fit the description in terms of each sub-element, hence the descriptor is indicative.
