Even though mobile marketing has had a lot of attention in the press over these past few years, yet an average business owner has limited ability to make the most of it. Mobile marketing gained importance and became a more feasible marketing channel for most businesses since the debut of iPhone. As a matter of fact, we have already received some very positive feedback from the mobile marketing drives that we undertook since then.
Facebook Advertising
Facebook started and took us all by storm in 2008. Facebook became a part of our everyday lives in 2009. Now in 2010 we see Facebook turning into a profit churning advertising channel for most businesses. Facebook will soon become a reliable source of sales or sales leads using a combination of keyword targeting and pay per click model, for its advertisers.
Twitter Marketing
2009 saw the launch of Twitter, creating a mass frenzy on the Internet, and later it went on to become one of the most visited online establishments. Even though the usage of twitter really took off, the average businesses couldn't quite capitalize on it as a reliable source of revenue. Now that Twitter has settled and has become a part of the everyday (just like Facebook), we see it as becoming a very viable marketing medium for relatively small businesses. Already over a $100m has been raised and yet they don't have a clear revenue model, so our prediction is that they will come up with some form of paid advertising model early in 2010, quite similar to the one Facebook has, where the businesses can target their ads based on what people are Tweeting about.
Social Media
Social media has started out in leaps and bounds. A recent report from Hitwise quoted that the traffic to such social media websites has in fact even exceeded that for search engines in New Zealand, in the first week of December, and is all set to do the same in Australia as well by the time 2009 ends. Even though sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn are the leaders on this front, there still are many hundreds, if not thousands of, other social media websites focused on music, videos, photos, social networking, content sharing and more. At large, 2009 was a year where the extent and impact of social media was relatively hard to measure and unheard of. Though social media is quite a different medium to search, yet the exposure available for the businesses is huge. We believe that 2010 will definitely see an increase in the strategic social media campaigns that produce substantial results.
Video Marketing
Since Google took over You Tube, the online video community has seen rapid growth. In fact, You Tube has now become the second largest search engine in the world, second only to Google. Up until now online video was mainly focused on entertainment purposes, but in 2010 we expect to see an increase in the videos used on websites which form a part of their sales message. It has been observed that adding videos to a website has lead to significant improvements in the website's conversion rate. Considering an environment where conversion rates determine the amount that the advertisers can afford to spend on online advertising, online videos are bound to take off.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
2009 yet again proved to be a year which saw significant growth in business awareness of SEO and their subsequent investment in using SEO services offered by some SEO company or implementing it on their own. Even though SEO still is within the budget of small business owners, it might become way too expensive for them to effectively complete, in the near future. Google will continue to be the main focus of all the SEO efforts even in 2010, and the profits earned by achieving a top ranking will continue to increase due to the increase in internet usage overall.
Bing
2009 saw a new beginning, the launch of Bing as Microsoft's rival search engine. Even though nobody is in favor of monopoly, but many still believe that Google has a monopoly over search and why not, after all they offer such great products and services. It is hoped that Bing might become a threat to Google in the near future, but it still is in its early stages and won't pose any threat to Google in 2010… however 2011 might be the year?
Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising
Google Adwords is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of PPC advertising. They still control about 90% of the search market in Australia and USA. 2010 is expected to be no different, the focus of PPC advertising will continue to be on Google Adwords, but there may also be an opportunity to run PPC advertising on Bing, Facebook and on other social media websites.
Content Strategy
The eventual success of any of the above mentioned strategies will largely be determined by the quality of content you produce (eg. Free reports, articles, tips etc) , and your capability to effectively market that content online. With the growing competitiveness of the online marketplace with each passing day, the companies that achieve the maximum success are those whose strategies are based around offering high value content for free. Online marketing relies on the same principles as offline marketing, those being, giving significant value upfront, building a relationship over time and finally making the sale. Only those companies that follow this methodology and create marketing and sales systems around it will dominate their respective markets online
Cloud Computing
Even though cloud computing won't be counted as a marketing strategy; it still does influence the methods we use for marketing our services online. If we have a better system in a place for managing sales, marketing and accounts and the business overall then cloud computing could play a much larger role in online businesses in 2010. Cloud computing is already being used in our daily operations and the productivity benefits made through cloud computing can never be underrated and they shall only continue to grow.
