The role of management.
Before we discuss the function of the management,let’s define the role of management.Essentially,the role of managers is to guide organizstions toward goal accomplishment.All organizations exist for certain purposes or goals, and managers are responsible for combining and using organizational resources to ensure that their organizationa achieve their purposes.management moves an organization toward its purposes and goals by assigning activities that organization members perform.If the activities are designal effectively,the production of each individual worker will contribute to the attainment of organizational goals.Management strives to encourage individual activity that will lead to reaching organizational goals and discourage individual activity that will hinder the accomplishment of those goals.“There is no idea more important to managing than goals.management has no meaning apart from its goals.”managers must ,therefore ,keep organizational goals in mind at all times.
The function of management.
Management in all business and organizational activities is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives efficiently and effectively. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization (a group of one or more people or entities) or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal. Resourcing encompasses the deployment and manipulation of human resources, financial resources, technological resources, and natural resources.
Planning is the ongoing process of developing the business' mission and objectives and determining how they will be accomplished. Planning includes both the broadest view of the organization, e.g., its mission, and the narrowest, e.g., a tactic for accomplishing a specific goal.
Organizing is establishing the internal organizational structure of the organization. The focus is on division, coordination, and control of tasks and the flow of information within the organization. It is in this function that managers distribute authority to job holders.
Staffing is filling and keeping filled with qualified people all positions in the business. Recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating and compensating are the specific activities included in the function. In the family business, staffing includes all paid and unpaid positions held by family members including the owner/operators.
Directing is influencing people's behavior through motivation, communication, group dynamics, leadership and discipline. The purpose of directing is to channel the behavior of all personnel to accomplish the organization's mission and objectives while simultaneously helping them accomplish their own career objectives.
Controlling is a four-step process of establishing performance standards based on the firm's objectives, measuring and reporting actual performance, comparing the two, and taking corrective or preventive action as necessary.#p#分頁標題#e#
The Responsibilitues of Senior management
Senior management is generally a team of individuals at the highest level of organizational management who have the day-to-day responsibilities of managing a company or corporation, they hold specific executive powers conferred onto them with and by authority of the board of directors and/or the shareholders. There are most often higher levels of responsibility, such as a board of directors and those who own the company (shareholders), but they focus on managing the senior or executive management instead of the day-to-day activities of the business. In Project Management, senior management is responsible for authorizing the funding of projects.
Senior management have four primary responsibility.
First,they shoud have considerable practical experience within their organization.Perferally,they should have been executives in one or mora of the organization’s major departments.This experience will help them develop plans that are both practical and tailor-made for the organization.
Second,they should be capable of replacing any narrow view of the organization they may have acquired while holding other organizational position with an understanding of the organization as a whole.They must know how all parts of the organization function and interralation. In other words, they must possess an abundance of conceptual skills.
Third,they should have some knowledge of and interested in the social,political,technical,and the economic trends that could affect the future of the organization.They must be skillful in defining those trends and possess the expertise to maximize its success.This responsiblities cannot be overemphasized
The fourth and last responsibility for senior management is that they be able to work well with others.Their position will inevitablely require them to work closely with several key members of the organization,So it is essential that they possess the personal chaticteristics necessary to collabrate and advise effectively.The ability to communicate clearly,both orally and in writing,is one of the most important of these charicteristics.
Challenges for Chinese Management in the 21st Century
Since the entary of 21st century,what we talk most is globalization.What is globalization.Brief explaination is that people can do business everywhere you want ,whatever you are without the limitation of the country boundaries.However ,every coin has two sides,as well as globalization.China now has become the second largest economy,and the biggest export country of industry product.But the challenge facing China’s companies is how to adapt themselves to the trend——globalization.What they need is a knowledge of international management.
International management is simply the performance of management activities across national borders.It entails reaching organizational objectives by extending management activities to include an emphasis on organizations in foreign countries.The trend toward increased international management or globalization,is now widely recognized.The primary question for most firms is not whether to globalize,but how and how fast to do so and how to measure global progress over time.#p#分頁標題#e#
International management can take several different forms,from simply analyzing and fighting competition in foreign markets to establishing a formal partnership with a foreign company.BYD.Inc,for example,has been vigorously fighting competition in a foreign markets.This company,a manufacturer of cars,headquarted in Shenzheng,has achieved outstanding success by gaining significant control over a portion of its multinational markets.The company built factories in 11 countries because experience showed management that competitors could best be beaten in foreign markets if BYD actually produce products within those markets.A message recently sent to BYD stockholds by company president Wang Chuanfu indicates the company is continuing to make good progress in the international area.Wang has promised to persist in his efforts to developBYD into a “globe-able” organization.
The notable trend that exists in China and other countries toward developing business relationship in and with foreign countries is expected to accelerate even more in the future .According to the statistics from People’s Bank of China,China investment in foreign countries and investment by foreign countries in China has grown since 1989 and expected to continue growing.Information of this nature has spurred both management and practicing managers to insist that a knowledge of international management is necessery for a thorough understanding of the contemporary fundamentals of management.
How to compete with others to be a successful manager
Be yourself. It may sound ironic to be yourself while doing a different task. It may be ironic but it is possible and is more recommended than changing yourself just to be a good manager. After all, you were promoted because of what you are before you became the manager. Keeping your personality will not be a hindrance to properly lead people. If you are serious, then be serious when managing. If you are fun-loving, then continue to be that when leading people. There are so many ways to be a good manager that will always fit your personality.
Listen. As a manager, you are supposed to give orders and talk about directions. Although that is true, but having a good listening ability will help you understand the situation better, which is important when solving problems. So, listen to everyone—from your superior to your employees.
Be a good role model. Babies learn through imitating what they see, so as with your employees. They do what they see in you. Better act as if you are being watched. Always have good manners and always do the right thing. Being righteous makes you deserving of respect. And being a respectful manager makes you a good role model.
Be supportive. As a manager, one of your major tasks is to motivate your team to do the best it can. This skill is the most important to be a successful manager. But, this skill is also the most difficult to develop. Being supportive will require you to know the strengths and weaknesses of every person in your team. And then, you should be able to delegate tasks that each of them can do best. Being supportive is surely critical but it can be learned as long as you have the heart to understand and familiarize your team well. #p#分頁標題#e#
