美國康奈爾大學essay-Tuesday—Gilbert&Sullivan’s Ruddlgore, presented by Cornell Savoyards
I went to a concert at the Schwartz Center on June 25. I learned that the concert would present Gilbert&Sullivan’s Ruddlgore performed by a band named The Cornell Savoyards .To be honest, I knew extremely limited about this band and what they were going to bring to the audience . The performance began at 7:30 pm, so I arrived at the Schwartz Center several minutes earlier. The moment I stepped into the hall, I found that I was totally wrong about the performance . It was not a popular song concert actually . It was an opera. Operas written by Gilbert and Sullivan were very popular during the Victorian era and still bear a significant influence upon western society. Until then I realized that I should dress more formally tonight .
When players started to play , I found that the opera was quite relaxed and very different from that written by Wagner or Verdi. The music has a strong rhythm , which made me nearly applause with it. However , it was a pity that I cannot catch the lines they sang clearly . So I had no idea what the story is about. I think I should keep myself much more occupied with the opera or something like this to cultivate my own intuitive grasp of spiritual knowledge.
I had been very busy recently. Watching an opera like this provided me with an excellent opportunity to relax my brain , which was enough for someone who knows quite little about serious music . This experience intrigued me to learn more about Gilbert&Sullivan’s work . Their work were really shocked, and moved me deeply. Hopefully , I could appreciate more than just melody the next time I enter an opera house .
Wednesday ----The happiness of pursuit: machineries of joy
After attending the lecture, I found the book “The Happiness of Pursuit: What Neuroscience Can Teach Us About the Good Life” by Shimon Edelman on internet. I loved this book after a couple of chapters following along with Edelman's train of thought. It offered insights to a thorough understanding of what minds are, how they relate to each other and to the world, and how we can make the best of it all. I enjoyed the mix of psychology, computer science and philosophy. First, I know how our brain works, what processes our mind has, and then I maybe apply the empirical scientific knowledge into our life.#p#分頁標題#e#
Here are two examples: in a discussion of "who is wise?" he cites an opinion from the Talmud, and then discusses how to listen to women who would have been not even considered. At last, "he who learns from every body" is the conclusion of the discussion. Happy is the man who learns from the misfortunes of others. Since Man can effect no great matter merely by his own personal Strength, but as he acts in Society and conjunction with others.
The other example is more systemic: in demonstrating the magnitude of the unconscious calculation taking place all the time, he uses an excellent example of lifting a water glass to your mouth. Among the many brain events evoked by a visual stimulus, some ones are associated specifically with conscious perception, and others merely reflect nonconscious processing. During nonconscious processing, evidence would be accumulated locally within specialized subcircuits, but would fail to reach the threshold.
I believe I have thoroughly enjoyed the pursuit, from “what happened” to “how the human brain functions”. A fundamental understanding of pleasure and joy via the brain is present. When the things are happening, our brain is highly active, involved in patterned networks, and constantly learning from experience.
Old-Time Appalachin Music and Original- presented
by Evil City String Band
Have you ever heard the saying that “No other medium is like music in demonstrating that kind of beauty which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent”? I actually experienced the wonderful felling. Recently, I watched a concert about old-time appalachin music and original on the Cornell Arts Quad by Evil City String Band which specializing in Old-Time style music with an original twist. Most music played in the concert was old and new songs blend harmoniously with their own compositions. But I am not a big fan to it when the event was first started. I just accompanied my friends there to feel the atmosphere. But you know when you're eighteen, life is so exciting and anything seems possible. Ever thousands of people flooded into the concert, and the concert was totally full, left no one seat empty. However something crazy happened.
Anyway, the general vibe of the whole event was pretty fantastic. I was also shorked at how excellent their sound was compared to what I had listened before. It really can be called a Music Celebration, that produced great music like the voice of god and the scene atmosphere was pushed toward the climax time and time again. I began to like the musical event not only because of the music itself but also the people’s enthusiastic there. The vibe of the concert was pushed up to its climax with their strong performance. And at the end, the band seemed genuinely appreciative of the crowd's applause. And that's the funniest thing about the concert in my perspective and it is out of this world. I'm really honored to fell this kind of events just because somewhat accidentally and this is the hour of an ablution heart. music’s wide and long-standing appeal is beyond words.
